SUMMARY:Docs@TheByre: Syrian Stories- Female Voice
DESCRIPTION:Women in Syria have not only borne the brunt of the country’s lengthy civil war\, they have been marginalised and rendered invisible\, despite their huge contribution to the struggle. Yet\, few of the stories are told by them. In this collection of short films produced by the Scottish Documentary Institute in collaboration with the British Council and Bidayyat\, female Syrian filmmakers share their experience and perspective being a refugee in neighbouring countries: Lebanon\, Jordan and Turkey. \nThe screening will be followed by a Q&A with project mentor\, Noe Mendelle and a discussion about the politics of art and the art of politics. Free but ticketed. https://byretheatre.com/events/cinema-documentary-syrian-stories-female-voice/ \n  \n*** \nAbout Docs@The Byre: Celebrating the Cinematic Documentary \nDocumentaries don’t just inform us about the world. They inspire\, delight\, and immerse us in the world.  They engage and exhilarate with their stories\, characters\, images\, and sounds. They take us places we haven’t even imagined of going. And yet\, documentary gets a bad rap. People treat it like the broccoli of the film kingdom: good for you but not necessarily pleasurable— more talking heads for the telly than a spectacle at the cinema. By showing compelling documentaries on the big screen and holding conversations with documentary professionals and scholars\, Docs@TheByre sets the record straight.  After all\, documentaries may have something to teach us but there’s also a lot we can learn about documentary— and should learn in this age of ‘post-truth’.

SUMMARY:Professor Sarah Smith\, "Gender differences in goal-setting"
DESCRIPTION:The seminar takes place from 4:05 om to 5:20 on Thursday\, 14th February\, in JBH room in Castlecliffe. \nAbstract \nThe question of how to motivate effort and improve performance is important in work and non-work settings. Introducing competition is often seen as one way to increase effort but it may put women at a disadvantage compared to men. What is needed is a way of motivating effort that is gender neutral\, i.e. something that is equally effective\, in terms of improving performance\, for men and women. This paper presents evidence on gender differences in the performance-effect of setting oneself a goal. It is the first paper\, as far as we are aware\, to identify a causal effect of setting oneself a goal – previous experimental studies have captured intention to treat effects of nudges to set goals. It is also the first to study the causal effects of men and women setting goals of different values\, i.e. low-value versus high-value goals. Studying the effect of different-value goals turns out to be very important. The most striking empirical findings in our paper relate to the differential effect of goals of different values for men and women. Specifically we find that high-value goals improve performance for men and low-value goals lead to a worse outcome compared to no goal while\, by contrast\, low-value goals – and only low-value goals – improve performance for women. We discuss what our findings imply in underlying preferences and the implications for using goals to improve performance.

SUMMARY:Victoria Fomina "The Orthodox Neolibral"
DESCRIPTION:Victoria Fomina (PhD candidate at Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology Central European University) “The Orthodox Neoliberal: Religious Ethics and Market Practices in Post-Soviet Russia”Rm\n\nThursday 22 November\, 4-5.15pm\, Buch 216\nThis talk will explore how Christian Orthodox conceptions of economy come together with neoliberal visions of the market and social virtue in post-Soviet Russia. It analyzes Orthodox intellectuals’ recent attempts to break away from the ascetic legacy of Orthodox tradition and positively rethink the ethicality of wealth accumulation. In particular\, it focuses on the case of the Union of Orthodox Entrepreneurs (UOE) – a Saint-Petersburg-based organization established in 2012 with the goal of creating a culture of entrepreneurship based on Orthodox values. Drawing on fieldwork with the UOE\, the paper will analyze how contemporary Orthodox entrepreneurs think about the relationship between religiosity and business and how they imagine the spiritual significance of entrepreneurial work. It argues that the Union members’ nostalgia for the honor code of imperial Russian merchants and their longing for a business community united by faith reflects the insecurities produced by the lack of effective mechanisms of contract enforcement in the post- Soviet market. Despite the UOE’s ambition of creating a shared “ethical culture\,” most of its members still hold highly idiosyncratic views on the morality of commonplace legal and illegal business practices and are reluctant to subscribe to a unified code of ethical behavior. The paper will suggest that the entrepreneurs’ resistance to the idea of a code is associated both with the constraints of a market that limits their ability to act on their proclaimed values and with the distinct model of ethical formation inherent to Orthodox tradition\, which resists reduction to a narrow ethical code and offers believers multiple individualized ways of pursuing spirituality. \n\n
