SUMMARY:Serena Parekh (Northeastern University) - "Global Refugee Crisis as a Structural Injustice"
DESCRIPTION:“I argue in my talk that the global refugee crisis needs to be understood as a kind of structural injustice. The global refugee crisis is often depicted as a crisis for Western states who are burdened with rescuing refugees through resettlement and granting asylum. The main injustice or harm that refugees need to be rescued from was committed was by the refugee-producing states. But this way of seeing the situation misrepresents the refugee crisis by focusing too narrowly. I argue that we ought to adopt Iris Young’s structural injustice framework and see the refugee crisis as a form of structural injustice. This way of framing the global refugee crisis gives rise to a new way of thinking about our moral obligations.” \n

SUMMARY:StAIGS Feminist Film Series: Slumber Party Massacre
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 31\, 17:30-20:30 \nLocation: Byre Theatre Studio \nFilm: Slumber Party Massacre \nDirector: Amy Holden Jones \nUS | 1982 | 76 minutes | English | R \nSession hosted by: Dr Lucy Fife Donaldson\, Department of Film Studies \n  \nWritten by Rita Mae Brown\, Slumber Party Massacre is the directorial debut of Amy Holden Jones.  As a film conceived and made by women\, within the production context of low-budget genre filmmaking\, Slumber Party Massacre presents a particular opportunity to consider if a slasher film can be a feminist endeavour and what pleasures this most disreputable and oft-decried as misogynistic horror sub-genre offers for women.

SUMMARY:Thinking Aloud: The Handmaid’s Tale
DESCRIPTION:The Handmaid’s Tale\, the best-selling novel by Margaret Atwood is more than a dystopian fiction\, it is a cultural touchstone. Published in 1985\, it has been adapted multiple times over: as a film (Volker Schlöndorff’s 1990 The Handmaid’s Tale); as a Hulu television programme headed for its fourth series\, as a radio drama\, as a stage play\, as ballet\, and even\, disturbingly and controversially\, as a ‘sexy’ Halloween costume. Touching on the subjects like environmental crisis\, totalitarianism\, misogyny\, and fundamentalist theocracy\, the book feels more prophecy than speculative fiction.  So much so that the red-cloak of the handmaids has become expression of global feminist and political resistance. \n  \nIn this event\, we take the book and its multiple cultural and political expressions as launchpad for a discussion between scholars from Film Studies\, International Relations\, Philosophy\, and Russian as well as with you\, the audience. We will explore ways of approaching this phenomenon (and Atwood’s recently released sequel\, The Testaments) so that we may investigate its significance and show thinking in action. \n  \nThe event is FREE but ticketed. To arrange a place: \n  \nBook at byretheatre.com\, call 01334 475 000 or pop in to the Byre Theatre\, Abbey Street\, St Andrews

SUMMARY:Vanessa Wills (George Washington University) — "Black Woman Marxists on Race\, Gender\, and Class"
DESCRIPTION:Wed 16 Oct: Vanessa Wills (George Washington University) — “Black Woman Marxists on Race\, Gender\, and Class.” \n11am – 12:30pm in Edgecliffe G03. \nAbstract: Are class-based analyses doomed to failure in adequately theorizing race- and gender-based oppressions? My project is to draw attention to the ways that Black women writing and organizing in the Marxist tradition have tackled and centered this question. My focus here is on three of these remarkable women: Angela Davis\, Claudia Jones\, and Louise Thompson Patterson. Each of these women were (or\, in the case of Davis\, still are) deeply engaged in anti-racist and anti-sexist organizing\, and saw these as commitments that were compatible with and mutually reinforcing of their adoption of a Marxist\, class-based approach to theorizing oppression. What are the lessons that their scholarship and activism can teach us about the nature of exploitation\, oppression\, and intersectionality?

SUMMARY:Classics and Race: research and pedagogy
DESCRIPTION:Classics and Race: research and pedagogy\nWe will consider concepts of race in relation to the classical world\, Greek and Roman. The aim of the workshop is both academic and pedagogical: to consider ideas of racial identity in ancient societies\, and the role of race in shaping the discipline of ‘Classics’ that we as modern-day classicists have inherited. We hope to generate discussion on the way that we understand and present ‘Classics’ in relation to race in the present day\, and how it (and we) should change and adapt in the future. \n  \n10.00 – 10.15 Welcome\, Rebecca Sweetman (Head of School\, Classics) and Introduction\, Sian Lewis (University of St Andrews) \n10.15 – 11.00 Classics for all? SUMMARY:Tommy Curry (Edinburgh) — "Thinking through the Silence: Theorizing the Rape of Jewish Males during the Holocaust through Survivor Testimonies."
DESCRIPTION:Thurs 10 Oct: Tommy Curry (Edinburgh) — “Thinking through the Silence: Theorizing the Rape of Jewish Males during the Holocaust through Survivor Testimonies.” \nAbstract: The Holocaust is one of the most horrific atrocities of the 20th century. The accounts of violence\, death\, and dehumanization by the Jewish people has forever stained the human record. Over the last several decades there has been an attempt to gender genocide and Holocaust studies by looking at sexual as well as lethal violence. While there have been tremendous consideration of women’s experiences of rape and sexual abuse during the Holocaust\, the rape of men have not been previously engaged as a matter of study or archival investigation before my discovery. This paper is the first to reveal the rape of Jewish men during the Holocaust and the implications this finding has for Holocaust and genocide studies more broadly

SUMMARY:Tommy Curry (Edinburgh) — "Ad Limen Homini: Caricatures of Man within the Schema of Racial Disposability"
DESCRIPTION:Wed 9 Oct: Tommy Curry (Edinburgh) — “Ad Limen Homini: Caricatures of Man within the Schema of Racial Disposability”\n11am – 12:30pm in Edgecliffe G03. \nAbstract: Since the 19th century\, racialized males have been thought to pose a threat to Western civilization. The fear white societies have of Black males has been well documented throughout history in ethnological and social sciences\, psychology\, and philosophy. Despite the repetitive caricatures of racialized males as savage beasts who threaten to devolve western civilization towards primitivity and pestilence\, there has been no philosophical inquiry into the presence of this racialized entity within Western patriarchal societies. This paper will be the first to articulate a schema of racism as a misandric aggression where the disposability of Black (male) bodies is explained through racial endogamy rather than white ignorance of racism or white aversions to otherness. This paper maintains that the racial phobics associated with outgroup men ground the America’s civil society.

SUMMARY:Andrew Mason (Warwick): When are appearance norms unjust?
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 2nd of October from 11-12:30 in Edgecliffe G03.\n\nAbstract: Appearance norms are often a matter of public concern. Some seem objectionable because they are sex-biased or race-biased\, whilst others are morally problematic because they are demanding\, costly not to comply with\, and have harmful consequences. The issue of when an appearance norm is unjust and what makes it so merits deeper consideration. A number of potential sources of injustice are examined: first\, that an appearance norm is unjust when it is unfair because of the unequal burdens it imposes on different groups; second\, that it is unjust when compliance with it would worsen unjust disadvantages or burden those who have been unjustly disadvantaged; third\, that it is unjust when it is demeaning or disrespectful; fourth\, that it is unjust when the costs related to compliance and non-compliance mean that it (or\, more precisely\, the practice in which it is embedded) is oppressive or compromises individual liberty; fifth\, that it is unjust when compliance with it is harmful.

SUMMARY:Docs@TheByre: Syrian Stories- Female Voice
DESCRIPTION:Women in Syria have not only borne the brunt of the country’s lengthy civil war\, they have been marginalised and rendered invisible\, despite their huge contribution to the struggle. Yet\, few of the stories are told by them. In this collection of short films produced by the Scottish Documentary Institute in collaboration with the British Council and Bidayyat\, female Syrian filmmakers share their experience and perspective being a refugee in neighbouring countries: Lebanon\, Jordan and Turkey. \nThe screening will be followed by a Q&A with project mentor\, Noe Mendelle and a discussion about the politics of art and the art of politics. Free but ticketed. https://byretheatre.com/events/cinema-documentary-syrian-stories-female-voice/ \n  \n*** \nAbout Docs@The Byre: Celebrating the Cinematic Documentary \nDocumentaries don’t just inform us about the world. They inspire\, delight\, and immerse us in the world.  They engage and exhilarate with their stories\, characters\, images\, and sounds. They take us places we haven’t even imagined of going. And yet\, documentary gets a bad rap. People treat it like the broccoli of the film kingdom: good for you but not necessarily pleasurable— more talking heads for the telly than a spectacle at the cinema. By showing compelling documentaries on the big screen and holding conversations with documentary professionals and scholars\, Docs@TheByre sets the record straight.  After all\, documentaries may have something to teach us but there’s also a lot we can learn about documentary— and should learn in this age of ‘post-truth’.
