SUMMARY:Feminist Philosophy Reading Group- Socialism and Feminism
DESCRIPTION:In theme with the ongoing UCU strikes\, for the next Feminist Philosophy Reading Group we will be discussing the relationship between feminism and socialism! \nWe will be reading Ann Ferguson’s entry on Socialism in the Blackwell Companion to Feminist Philosophy and you can access the paper here(with your uni login): https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1002/9781405164498.ch52 . It’s a nice short paper (9 pages) which gives an overview of the literature on the relationship between feminism and socialism. \nWe will upload a précis (a small cheat sheet\, with terms and notions to understand the main arguments) to help read the text the week prior to the meeting. The précis will be available on one drive\, accessible with your St Andrews ID: https://universityofstandrews907-my.sharepoint.com/:f:/g/personal/laj7_st-andrews_ac_uk/EgiK4kR-fvxOvrZDkXBhYhwBYtekAjNXaOU8WbZYBHK0ug?e=RWkiZD \nEveryone is welcome: undergrad students\, masters\, PhDs\, staff members\, philosophers and non-philosophers alike. The goal is to discuss feminist philosophy in a stimulating and accessible environment. \nIf you’d like to be added to the mailing list\, or have any questions\, you can email us at feministphilo@st-andrews.ac.uk. We also welcome your proposals for upcoming instalments\, as the reading group will run bi-weekly (at least we will try) this semester. If you would like to propose a reading for the group then send us an email with your idea as soon as possible. \nWe look forward to seeing you!

SUMMARY:CANCELLED due to UCU strike: Workshop: Kira Muratova
DESCRIPTION:Workshop on Soviet/Ukrainian female film director Kira Muratova\, 24 February 2020. \n\nPlease plan joining us for a workshop + screening to celebrate the work of remarkable Soviet/Ukrainian feminist director Kira Muratova (1934-2018) \n5 – 9 pm\, 24 February 2020. \nSchool 1 (in The Quads)\, University of St Andrews. \nKira Muratova\, who worked mostly in the Ukrainian city of Odessa\, is one of the most innovative\, imaginative\, exciting and versatile directors to emerge out of the Soviet Union\, where her early films were censored and her later work – celebrated. Whilst she is well known within the territory of Russia and Ukraine\, her work – an oeuvre that comprises more than fifteen feature films made over six decades — remains little seen and not widely recognized as part of the shaping feminist cannon of film history. With the workshop Kira Muratova@St Andrews\, co organized by the IGCCC and CRSCEES\, we aim to compensate for this. \nWe will screen her film KOROTKIE VSTRECHI/BRIEF ENCOUNTERS (1967)\, followed by discussion. This is Muratova’s first solo-directed feature film\, made at Odessa studios\, starring Nina Ruslanova\, Vladimir Visotsky\, and Kira Muratova herself\, B&W\, 87 min. \nIn addition\, we will welcome contributions from Dr. Victoria Donovan and Prof. Dina Iordanova (St Andrews)\, Irina Schulzki (convener of the Kira Muratova Research group/LMU Munich)\, Dr Masha Shpolberg (Yale/Wellesley)\, critic/independent scholar Giuliano Vivaldi. We also hope that Muratova’s husband\, artist Evgeny Golubenko\, who designed the magnificent ornate sets for most of her later films\, will join us for discussion via SKYPE\, TBC.

SUMMARY:Jonathan Jenkins Ichikawa "Deception and Valid Consent"
DESCRIPTION:Jonathan Jenkins Ichikawa (Vancouver) “Deception and Valid Consent”\n \nFriday\, 6 December; 2pm to 4pm; Edgecliffe G03.\n\n“When all goes well\, one’s agreement to φ constitutes valid consent to φ. If I agree to your doing X to me\, for instance\, and all goes well\, then I waive any right I had against your doing X to me\, and other things being equal\, you are morally permitted to do X to me. This paper concerns what it takes for all to be going\, in the relevant sense\, well. In particular\, under what circumstances does ignorance on my part\, or deception on yours\, prevent my agreement from constituting valid consent? Commonsense liberal ethics says it does so only when I am ignorant about central elements of the situation: if I am deceived about who it is I am agreeing to have sex with\, for example\, because of a partner’s disguise\, I do not give valid consent. But if I am seduced by someone who exaggerates their influence in my industry\, it is widely thought\, whatever wrong done to me is not a violation of my consent. Tom Dougherty has argued against this commonsense stance\, suggesting that any time one is deceived about a “dealbreaker”\, one’s consent is invalidated.\nI will argue three things. First\, Dougherty’s view cannot be right; it is subject to clear counterexamples. Second\, attempts to rehabilitate the dealbreaker framework by invoking subtler distinctions in the same spirit are unlikely to succeed; a parallel to the “defeaters” literature in post-Gettier epistemology is instructive. Third\, this motivates an altogether different way of thinking about the motivating questions: instead of focusing on whether deception can prevent one’s agreement to φ from constituting valid consent to φ\, we should focus instead on questions of just what contents one consenting to\, given the conventional ways in which consent is communicated.”

SUMMARY:Extracted Speech: Being Made to Speak (led by Sophia Rommel)
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday November 20\, 4 – 6 pm\, Edgecliffe G03. \nExtracted Speech: Being Made to Speak (led by Sophia Rommel) \nAbstract: Imagine you are a woman sitting in a tutorial\, discussing a seminal text with your group. You desire to point out how the author’s argument entails implicit gendered assumptions. You look around the room and remember your teacher’s praise of the text as convincing\, your classmates’ shared belief that the main argument is logically valid\, and your friend’s dismissal of your critical point when you told her about it before the tutorial. When your teacher asks you whether you have any thoughts on the text\, you say\, “it’s well-written\, convincing\, and the main argument is logically valid.” The class nods in agreement. You feel momentarily relieved\, but thereupon realise you were made to utter a statement completely at odds with your thoughts. Power\, speech\, and agency are inextricably intertwined. So\, what happens if we explore how power enables us to speak? More specifically\, what if power makes us say something we disagree with? This is what McKinney labels ‘extracted speech’. What can we discover when we apply this notion to a classroom setting\, such as a Philosophy tutorial? \nThis is part of the St Andrew’s MAP Chapter — Minorities And Philosophy (MAP).

SUMMARY:Wil Cunningham "The Neuroscience of Self and Social Identity"
DESCRIPTION:Thurs 7 Nov\, 10-12pm\, Edgecliffe G03 \nOur capacity to form sophisticated social groups has been essential to our survival both individually and as a species. Coordination in groups has allowed us to surmount the difficulties posed to us as organisms that are individually very weak and physically vulnerable relative to other large mammals. In this talk\, I will discuss the neural systems that give rise to the development of our social identity\, and how these processes operate to maintain our social relationships. I will describe these processes across multiple levels of analysis\, linking the effects of self-categorization and social identity on perception and evaluation to brain function. In addition to highlighting how these processes allow us to maintain our relationships within a group\, I will also discuss the implications of these processes for stereotyping\, prejudice\, and discrimination.

SUMMARY:Marsha Henry (LSE) "Deploying Theories of Gender\, Coloniality\, and Militarisation in Peacekeeping Studies"
DESCRIPTION:School VI\, 5pm – 7pm \nThe lecture is concerned with reimagining peacekeeping\, which starts with a return to critical theories and concepts in order to acknowledge the production of gendered\, racial and classed inequalities in peacekeeping relations. In particular\, critical concepts from gender theory such as standpoint and intersectionality\, alongside postcolonial and critical race theories that include the colour line and the geopolitics of coloniality the lecture traces the dead-ends that arise when peacekeeping studies relies on policy and practice driven objectives\, alone. \nMarsha Henry is an Associate Professor in the Department of Gender Studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Marsha’s research interests focus on critical military and peacekeeping studies; the political economy of sexual violence in postconflict settings; and intersectional feminist theories and methodologies. \n\nDeploying Theories of Gender\, Coloniality and Militarisation in Peacekeeping Studies

SUMMARY:Serena Parekh (Northeastern University) - "Global Refugee Crisis as a Structural Injustice"
DESCRIPTION:“I argue in my talk that the global refugee crisis needs to be understood as a kind of structural injustice. The global refugee crisis is often depicted as a crisis for Western states who are burdened with rescuing refugees through resettlement and granting asylum. The main injustice or harm that refugees need to be rescued from was committed was by the refugee-producing states. But this way of seeing the situation misrepresents the refugee crisis by focusing too narrowly. I argue that we ought to adopt Iris Young’s structural injustice framework and see the refugee crisis as a form of structural injustice. This way of framing the global refugee crisis gives rise to a new way of thinking about our moral obligations.” \n

SUMMARY:Thinking Aloud: The Handmaid’s Tale
DESCRIPTION:The Handmaid’s Tale\, the best-selling novel by Margaret Atwood is more than a dystopian fiction\, it is a cultural touchstone. Published in 1985\, it has been adapted multiple times over: as a film (Volker Schlöndorff’s 1990 The Handmaid’s Tale); as a Hulu television programme headed for its fourth series\, as a radio drama\, as a stage play\, as ballet\, and even\, disturbingly and controversially\, as a ‘sexy’ Halloween costume. Touching on the subjects like environmental crisis\, totalitarianism\, misogyny\, and fundamentalist theocracy\, the book feels more prophecy than speculative fiction.  So much so that the red-cloak of the handmaids has become expression of global feminist and political resistance. \n  \nIn this event\, we take the book and its multiple cultural and political expressions as launchpad for a discussion between scholars from Film Studies\, International Relations\, Philosophy\, and Russian as well as with you\, the audience. We will explore ways of approaching this phenomenon (and Atwood’s recently released sequel\, The Testaments) so that we may investigate its significance and show thinking in action. \n  \nThe event is FREE but ticketed. To arrange a place: \n  \nBook at byretheatre.com\, call 01334 475 000 or pop in to the Byre Theatre\, Abbey Street\, St Andrews

SUMMARY:Vanessa Wills (George Washington University) — "Black Woman Marxists on Race\, Gender\, and Class"
DESCRIPTION:Wed 16 Oct: Vanessa Wills (George Washington University) — “Black Woman Marxists on Race\, Gender\, and Class.” \n11am – 12:30pm in Edgecliffe G03. \nAbstract: Are class-based analyses doomed to failure in adequately theorizing race- and gender-based oppressions? My project is to draw attention to the ways that Black women writing and organizing in the Marxist tradition have tackled and centered this question. My focus here is on three of these remarkable women: Angela Davis\, Claudia Jones\, and Louise Thompson Patterson. Each of these women were (or\, in the case of Davis\, still are) deeply engaged in anti-racist and anti-sexist organizing\, and saw these as commitments that were compatible with and mutually reinforcing of their adoption of a Marxist\, class-based approach to theorizing oppression. What are the lessons that their scholarship and activism can teach us about the nature of exploitation\, oppression\, and intersectionality?
